Mike Buell – Florida Knifemakers Association

When man had to fight for his meals and huddle in caves for survival there existed a select breed of people whom I refer to as Saber-Tooth Tiger hunters. These menwere the ones who fought against a deadly prey, not because they needed to but because they wanted to, their blood pumping, adrenaline releasing, they longed for combat. It was in their soul to challenge themselves and see exactly how tough they really were and could be.

I have always prided myself in the thought that I am among those of the Saber-Tooth Tiger hunter breed and from my days of street hooliganism to my time as an 82nd Airborne Infantry Paratrooper, Professional Fighter, and Coach. I always sought to test my metal and even earned the nickname Spotted Steel from my Army boxing coach. So after fighting and coaching I looked for a craft that could represent my nature of Iron and found no better way to express my inner warrior than in the creation of instruments of a warrior — knives.

Knife making is important to me because in honing my craft I continue my lifelong quest of iron and always strive to advance the quality of my blades as I had previously advanced myself as a warrior. It represents the same spirit. I strive for perfection in my hand crafted blades and desire my creations to aid a kindred spirit in their own path of warrior-hood.
Thank You,
Michael Buell
“The Champ”

All my knives are handmade one at a time using the finest materials.
I grind ATS-34, S30V, BG-42 and Damascus steel.
I make hunters, filet knives, bowies, liner lock folders and an occasional slip joint folder.

Lowell Bray, Knifemaker – Florida Knifemakers Association

Lowell Bray has been a knife collector for over forty years and a knifemaker since 1985.  He is the author of hundreds of articles in Blade magazine and Knife World’s monthly publication.  He is also a Field Editor for Blade magazine and writes the popular “Your Knife Rights” column now carried in Blade.   Lowell is a member of the Florida Knifemakers’ Association, The Knifemakers Guild and is a Journeyman Smith with The American Bladesmith Society.

Lowell specializes in working fixed blades both forged and stock removal.  Stock removal blades are made of 440C or ATS-34 stainless steel.  Forged blades are made of various high carbon steels and some Damascus of his own making.  He also makes a small number of folding knives, using his own lock design.  The knives pictured here are representative.  He does not make standard models but prefers to make each knife unique.  He will also make custom knives of the clients design.

He usually attends the Florida Knifemakers’ Association Show, the Knifemakers Guild Show, the Blade Show, The Gator Cutlery Show and the Riverland Knife Collectors Show.  At other times, he tries to have at least a few knives in stock.

Patrick Burris – Florida Knifemakers Association

PAT BURRIS

I was raised on a farm in Eastern Tennessee. Growing up in a country setting, we had a great time in the outdoors working as well as having fun hunting and fishing.  I learned at an early age the need for quality, reliable tools.  One of the most important on the farm was a good knife.  I used to visit one of my uncles who would spend many hours teaching me how to sharpen a knife and to whittle the afternoon away on a soft piece of red cedar.  I began going quail hunting with my father as soon as I was old enough to kick briars out of the path.  I couldn’t wait for the fall, when I could pester Dad into taking me hunting again

My Dad was a machinist for a large aircraft manufacturer.  During the late sixties he began making straight knives.  I couldn’t get over how the fit and finish was so much better than the factory knives available at the time.  The feeling of pride and accomplishment as he showed me his knives, proved to be a major force in my desire to become a knife maker.

My knives are all individually crafted one at a time, with some of the finest materials available.  All blades are flat ground from bar stock, professionally heat treated, and sub-zero quenched.  In most cases all knives will come with a heavy weight, hand sewn leather sheath or pouch.

Through knifemaking, I have met some wonderful people.  People who are excited about their craft and willing to share their knowledge with anyone having an interest and the time to listen.  Collectors who enjoy the same enthusiasm and excitement as I feel when I find “that special knife” to add to my collection.  People who want to see their passions spread and evolve.

I take great pride in crafting each one of my knives and hope each will provide it’s owner with years of reliability and enjoyment.

Scales of Armadillo armor add uniqueness and one of a kind appeal. Most straight knives are supplied with 8-9 oz. handstitched sheath of premium leather.
